At Regency Park Primary School, our Performing Arts program provides students with opportunities to explore music, drama, and performance in ways that nurture creativity, confidence, and self-expression. From Prep through to Year 6, students follow a sequential program that develops technical skills, builds an appreciation for the arts, and encourages every child to find their unique voice. The program is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, covering both the development of skills and techniques through arts practice, as well as reflection and appreciation through responding to the arts.
In the early years (Prep to Year 2), students engage in the Music Room program, focusing on singing, listening, moving, and creating. Lessons develop an understanding of rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, and style. By the end of Year 2, students can read and perform simple rhythm patterns on percussion and tuned instruments such as glockenspiels, while drama and movement experiences allow them to explore performance through voice, body, and imagination.
In Years 3 and 4, instrumental skills are introduced, with keyboard forming a key part of the program. Students also engage in digital music-making using GarageBand, composing and arranging their own songs, and all Year 4 students participate in choir, developing pitch, diction, harmony, and ensemble skills.
In Years 5 and 6, students build ensemble and performance skills through small bands, learning a range of instruments, including:
- Ukulele
- Guitar
- Keyboard
- Bass
- Drums
- Vocals
Senior students may also join the school band, rehearsing regularly and performing to the wider school community. Every two years, senior students have the opportunity to participate in a musical production, with speaking and ensemble roles, while all students from Years 3 to 6 contribute through songs and choreography.
Performance opportunities are a valued part of school life at Regency Park and include:
- School musicals and productions
- Choir and band performances
- Community Night, Grandparents’ Day and celebrations for Mother’s and Father’s Day
- Assemblies, leadership ceremonies, and graduation events
The Performing Arts program at Regency Park Primary is about more than technical skills. It is about discovering the joy of expression, the power of collaboration, and the confidence that comes from performance. Our students are encouraged to take creative risks, embrace their individuality, and experience the satisfaction of contributing to a shared artistic journey.
