Mathematics

At Regency Park Primary School, we are committed to delivering a high-quality Mathematics program that challenges all learners and fosters a deep understanding of concepts. Through engaging lessons and high expectations, students are equipped with the skills and confidence they need to use mathematics effectively both in and beyond the classroom.

Our program is carefully differentiated to meet the needs of every learner, offering targeted support as well as extension opportunities for those ready to explore more advanced ideas. Lessons are based on the Victorian Curriculum and focus on both content strands, which include Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability, together with the proficiency strands of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning. This balance ensures that students develop accuracy and efficiency while also strengthening their ability to think critically and apply knowledge in different contexts.

Mathematics is taught for five to six hours each week. Each lesson typically begins with a short warm up to build fluency and activate prior knowledge, followed by explicit teaching and purposeful tasks that allow students to practise, apply and extend their learning. Teachers regularly assess student progress and use this information to guide instruction, ensuring that every child is supported to achieve growth.

An important focus of our approach to teaching Mathematics is the use of precise mathematical vocabulary. Teachers actively build and model vocabulary, encouraging students to use these terms in their reflections, explanations and problem-solving discussions. By engaging with challenging tasks, collaborating with peers and exploring strategies in real life contexts, students develop both confidence and competence as mathematical thinkers.

Our goal is to develop mathematically confident, curious and competent learners, equipped with critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success beyond the classroom.
