Leadership Ceremony

Last week, we proudly celebrated our Year 6 students as the leaders of our school. It was wonderful to gather as a school community to mark this milestone and recognise the responsibility and privilege of being in Year 6.

Families joined us as students recited the Regency Park leadership pledge and sang the classic, ‘Lean on Me.’ We were also honoured to welcome back past student leaders Ashton and Dylan, now at Wantirna College, who shared reflections on their time at Regency Park and inspired our students with their words and encouragement.

While all Year 6 students were acknowledged as leaders, selected students were formally presented with leadership badges, accepting their roles with pride and purpose. We extend our thanks to Mary Doyle MP for presenting the badges to these students.

Thank you to our Year 6 teachers and Mr Meeking for their organisation and support in making the day such a memorable part of our Regency calendar.

Open Classrooms

Last week, many families took the opportunity to visit classrooms, meet the 2026 teachers, and get a glimpse of the classroom setup. We hope this informal opportunity was valuable. If there is ever anything you would like to discuss with your child’s teacher, please don’t hesitate to reach out and schedule a time to meet.

Important Start of Year Reminders
As we settle into the year, I would also like to share some important reminders. These expectations reflect our shared commitment to ensuring every child is safe, well and ready to learn.

  • On time arrival – our classrooms are open from 8:50am with a prompt start to learning at 9am. If your child arrives after 9:00am, they may miss important instructions and key information that supports a positive and successful start to their learning.
  • Parking & Safe Driving – Our Kiss and Drop zones operate each morning on Amesbury Avenue and Stokes Road. To ensure traffic flows smoothly and safely, please do not leave your car when using these areas. Our Kiss and Drop areas rely on a quick departure. We also ask that you show consideration for our neighbours by avoiding stopping across driveways. Although everyone has places to be, taking time to model safe driving helps keep everyone safe.
  • Hats – please remember that school hats are essential for outside play and learning.
  • Jewellery – For safety reasons, students are not permitted to wear jewellery. The only acceptable jewellery items are – stud earrings or sleepers worn in the ears and watches. This policy ensures safety, particularly during physical activities.
  • No food birthday treats – please do not send food items to school for birthdays due to allergies and anaphylaxis concerns. If you would like your child to share something with their classmates, we encourage non-food treats such as stickers, pencils, bookmarks or small novelty items.
  • Phones & Smart Watches – as per our Mobile Phone policy, these devices should be handed into the office at the start of the day.

These reminders are a collective responsibility, and we all play an important role in supporting a positive, focused and respectful school environment for our students.

2026 School Priorities
Each year, we establish clear goals that align with our Annual Implementation Plan. This year marks the first year of implementation following our school review and the development of a new five-year Strategic Plan.

Our Strategic Plan outlines two broad goals: maximising learning growth and optimising student wellbeing.

In 2026, the actions we are prioritising to support these long-term goals include strengthening consistent, high-quality teaching practice, providing strong foundations with Prep – Year 2 phonics and stretching and supporting every learner to grow. As a school, we will focus on engaging in targeted professional learning to strengthen practice in line with the new Victorian Teaching and Learning Model, enhancing our approach to Disability Inclusion and working in partnership with our school community to introduce School-Wide Positive Behaviours

The Power of Routines: Supporting Your Child’s Return to School

As we settle into Term 1, many families are noticing that their children seem more tired than usual at the end of the school day. This is completely normal and expected – and understanding why can help us all support our children through this important transition period.

Understanding the Transition Fatigue
After the long summer break, returning to school requires significant mental and emotional energy. Your child isn’t just learning curriculum content – they’re navigating a new classroom environment, building relationships with a new teacher, adjusting to a different mix of classmates, and recalibrating to the structure and expectations of the school day.

Even for children who’ve been at our school for years, the start of a new year involves genuine cognitive and emotional work. Their brains are working hard to process new social dynamics, remember new routines, regulate their emotions in a busy environment, and adapt to different teaching styles. It’s no wonder they’re exhausted by 3:30!

The Cognitive Benefits of Routines
When children know what to expect, their brains can relax and focus on learning. Research shows that consistent daily routines help children in powerful ways:

Emotional wellbeing – less anxiety and better behaviour

Thinking skills – stronger memory, planning, and self-control

School success – better engagement and performance

Physical health – improved sleep and overall wellbeing

In short: predictable routines help children feel safe, and when children feel safe, they can learn and grow.

Starting Right at Regency Park
This is exactly why we begin every school year with our Start Right program. Rather than diving straight into curriculum, we invested the first 8 days of Term 1 into:

Getting to know one another – building genuine connections between students and with teachers

Establishing class culture – co-creating the kind of classroom community where everyone feels they belong

Teaching and practicing expectations – making routines, transitions, and behavioural expectations explicit so every child knows what success looks like

Building emotional literacy – helping students name their feelings and develop strategies for regulation

This intentional focus on relationships and routines isn’t “time away” from learning – it is the learning that makes everything else possible. When children feel safe, known, and clear about expectations, their brains are ready to take on new challenges.

How You Can Support at Home
As your child adjusts to the new school year, here are some evidence-based ways to support them:

● Prioritise sleep – Primary-aged children need 9-11 hours per night. A consistent bedtime routine (screen-free wind-down, same bedtime) makes an enormous difference to their capacity to cope with the school day.

● Keep morning and after-school routines predictable – Even simple routines (breakfast, pack bag, brush teeth) help children feel in control and reduce morning stress.

● Make space for feelings at home – Your child has been working hard to regulate their emotions and behaviour all day at school. Home is their safe place to relax and sometimes let out the big feelings they’ve been managing. This is healthy and normal.

● Build in downtime – Resist the urge to over-schedule after school. Children need unstructured time to play, rest, and decompress after a big day of learning and social navigation.

● Stay connected with open-ended questions – Instead of “How was your day?” try “What made you smile today?” or “Was there anything tricky today?”

A Period of Adjustment
If your child seems more emotional, more tired, or even more resistant about school in these early weeks, please know this is part of a healthy adjustment process. Most children settle beautifully within 3-4 weeks as routines become familiar and relationships deepen.

G’day from Gizmo 

Gizmo has settled into the new year at Regency Park. He has had the opportunity to visit each classroom to refresh the rules and expectations when we interact with him, he has visited many students for a chat and check in, and some lucky students have had the opportunity to do some training with Gizmo to support his continuation at the school.

There are still lots of hours of training for Gizmo to visit the school more regularly, so he will continue with his one visit a week for most of 2026. We are looking forward to celebrating his first birthday in April and he is still loving all of the attention.

2027 Prep Enrolments

Do you have a child starting Prep in 2027? Please contact the school office to receive updates on the enrolment process and key dates. We look forward to welcoming your child to our school community.

Punctuality in consent & payments on COMPASS

Thank you to all of our families who have already paid their family contributions. Please see our Business Manager, if you would like to undertake a payment plan for upcoming school costs.
Please note payments for the majority of school events/excursions will be processed via COMPASS.

Throughout the year there are many payments to be made for excursions, camps and swimming. It is very important that these payments are paid by the due date.

All events that require permission and payment will need to be made by the due date if you wish your child to participate.

Only in very extreme circumstances will we be able to process payments after this date, even if the excursion has not yet happened.

Unfortunately, this means your child misses out on the event.

From experience I know that parents can be quite upset when this occurs, so I ask you to be aware of this process and ensure that consent and payments are made via COMPASS on time.

If you have trouble accessing COMPASS or completing payments, please see our office staff who can assist you with the process.
