Last term, our school community has been involved in an exciting and important process to review the values that will guide Regency Park Primary School into the future. As we begin implementing our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework, we wanted to ensure that our values continue to reflect what is most important to our students, staff and families. We know that while schools evolve over time, our values remain at the heart of who we are, shaping the way we learn and treat one another every day.
The review process began with staff workshops, where four overarching sentiments emerged that captured the behaviours, attitudes and culture we aspire to see across our school. From these, possible sets of values were developed and shared with our entire community. We were delighted to receive thoughtful feedback from staff, families and students.
Following the consultation process, we are pleased to announce our new Regency Park Primary School values:
Respect – treating others with kindness, fairness and consideration through our words and our actions.
Personal Excellence – always trying your best and being proud of your effort.
Responsibility – taking pride in our actions and ownership of the choices we make.
Courage – being brave enough to try, speak up, or do the right thing.
These values represent our shared commitment to creating a school where everyone feels valued, supported and inspired to succeed. They reflect our belief that we all have a role to play in building a positive, inclusive and high-expectation learning community.
Over the coming months, we will work together to bring these values to life. Students will explore what each value looks like in the classroom, in the playground and within our wider community. As part of our SWPBS implementation, these values will become the foundation for teaching, recognising and celebrating the positive behaviours that help every child thrive.
We sincerely thank our students, families and staff for their engagement throughout this process. Your feedback has helped shape the values that will guide Regency Park Primary School for many years to come.
100 Days Of Prep
Last week, Regency Park Primary School proudly celebrated a wonderful milestone… our Prep students reaching 100 days of school!
We congratulate all of our Prep students on this exciting achievement. In just 100 days, they have shown incredible growth in their learning, independence and confidence. The enthusiasm they bring to the classroom each day has been wonderful to see.
The day was filled with fun and celebration. Students came dressed in creative outfits, with many wearing T-shirts decorated with 100 items, while others arrived looking as though they had aged 100 years (including our teachers!)
Throughout the day, students engaged in 100-themed learning activities before dancing their hearts out at a special silent disco. The celebrations concluded with a guard of honour from their Year 5 buddies, creating a memorable finish to the day.
Well done, Preps! We are incredibly proud of everything you have achieved in your first 100 days at Regency Park Primary School!
Regency Park Meets Some Of Our Future Students
Mrs Krawczyk was excited to take some Year 4 students to visit the children at Mariemont Kindergarten as part of our transition program.
As these children will be the Year 5 Buddies next year to these students, we felt this was a nice way to begin positive relationships, making the transition to Prep a more familiar and welcoming experience for the kindergarten children.
Professional Learning For Staff
Our Student-Free Day last week was certainly put to good use, with our whole staff coming together to continue progressing our school priorities.
We commenced the day working with our regional Occupational Therapist from the Student Support Services team, exploring sensory regulation strategies, including brain breaks that help alert and calm our learners so they are ready to engage in learning.
The day also included professional learning focused on reading comprehension, a review of our instructional approach to mathematics, and the development of consistent whole-school expectations as part of our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) rollout.
One of the greatest strengths of the day was the expertise within our own staff. Many team members led professional learning in their areas of expertise, generously sharing their knowledge and supporting the continued growth of their colleagues. I am incredibly grateful for the openness, professionalism and commitment of our staff, whose willingness to learn from one another continues to strengthen the work we do for every child, every opportunity.
Fidget Tools vs Fidget Toys
Please take a moment to read our Assistant Principal, Kylie Middlemiss’ article in this week’s newsletter. One of the areas we have recently clarified as a staff is the use of fidget tools in the classroom. When used appropriately, fidget tools can support students to remain calm, self-regulated and focused, enabling them to listen, attend and participate in learning. Effective fidget tools generally do not require visual attention and are not distracting to the student or those around them.
As many families will have noticed, fidget toys have grown in popularity. While many of these toys are engaging and appealing, they can also become a distraction from learning rather than a support for it. Over the coming weeks, teachers will be discussing with students what makes a suitable classroom fidget and the purpose these tools serve. We appreciate your support in helping your child select fidget tools that are appropriate for use in the classroom and that promote, rather than distract from, learning.
Industrial Action
Thank you to our families who adjusted their day to accommodate the strike action. We continue to be incredibly appreciative of the support of our community, and we are hopeful that an agreement will be reached shortly. In the meantime, any communication regarding industrial action will be provided through Compass.

Over the past few months, we have noticed an increase in the number of students bringing fidgets, poppers, spinners and other sensory items into the classroom.
It’s wonderful that so many of our families are tuning in to their child’s sensory and regulation needs, and we want to support that. But it’s also a good time to talk about the difference between a fidget toy and a fidget tool, because not everything marketed as a “focus aid” helps a child focus.
On our curriculum day last Friday, an occupational therapist from the Department of Education’s Student Support Services team ran a session with our staff on exactly this topic. We explored the broader trend being seen across schools in the rise of fidget toys, and what that shift means for classrooms. One point that really stuck with us were that some of the most effective fidget tools are the simplest. These could be a small piece of blue tack, warmed and kneaded quietly in a hand, or a strip of the rough side of Velcro – no noise, no need to look at it, no need to be shared or shown off, and it fits perfectly in a palm.
The goal of what has become known in popular culture as a ‘fidget toy’ is not actually to be able to ‘fidget’ – it’s on having a tool that supports a student to focus.
What’s The Difference?
Many products on the market today are labelled as ‘fidgets’, ‘sensory aids’, or ‘focus tools’, but they’re really designed to be toys.
They’re bright, they make noise, they’re satisfying to watch, and they’re fun to share with friends. In a classroom, these items tend to do the opposite of what they promise; instead of helping a child stay regulated and tuned in to their learning, they become a distraction, both for the student using them and for the students around them.
A genuine focus tool, on the other hand, is designed to support regulation without pulling attention away from learning. A good focus tool should:
be for the individual student only, not something to be shared, shown, or passed around
be used without needing to look at it, so the student’s eyes and attention stay on the teacher, the board, or the task.
be quiet, so it doesn’t distract other students
be small enough to fit inside a hand, so it stays discreet
are selected one at a time, and put away when the student has finished using it
When a focus tool meets these criteria, it can genuinely help a student self-regulate, manage restlessness, and stay engaged with their learning. When it doesn’t, it tends to become another thing competing for attention in a busy classroom.
What This Means At Regency Park Primary School
We want to support students who benefit from a fidget tool as part of their regulation toolkit, while making sure the classroom stays a calm and focused learning space for everyone. To do this, we’ll be:
running classroom discussions with students about the difference between fidget toys and fidget tools, and why that difference matters
helping students learn to identify which of their own items are genuine tools versus toys
establishing clear, consistent expectations about which items are appropriate to use during learning time, and which are better saved for recess and lunch
supporting teachers to have these conversations in age-appropriate ways.

How Families Can Help
If your child uses a fidget at home to help with focus or regulation, we’d love for that to continue supporting them at school too.
The best thing you can do is help them to answer the following question – is this something I can use quietly, without looking at it, that fits in my hand and is just for me?
If the answer is yes, it’s likely to be a great classroom fidget tool. If the answer is no, it might be better suited to playtime.

We are excited to be preparing for the launch of our very own Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) service in partnership with TeamKids. The service will commence on the first day of Term 4, Monday 5 October, and we are pleased to share that a number of families have already registered.
As we move closer to the launch, there are a couple of important opportunities for families to learn more about the service.
Online Information Session TeamKids will be hosting an online information session for Regency Park Primary School families on Tuesday 18 August at 7:00pm. This session is a great opportunity to learn more about the program, find out how to register, and discover what makes TeamKids a fantastic OSHC provider.
Meet the Team
Families are also invited to meet the TeamKids team on Friday 21st August from 8am. Join them outside the hall before assembly to enjoy a complimentary coffee and learn more about what TeamKids has to offer.
Hardcopies of the TeamKids handbook have also been sent to all families today. We look forward to welcoming TeamKids to our school community and are excited to offer this new service to support our families!

Punctuality in consent & payments on COMPASS
Thank you to all of our families who have already paid their family contributions. Please see our Business Manager, if you would like to undertake a payment plan for upcoming school costs.
Please note payments for the majority of school events/excursions will be processed via COMPASS.
Throughout the year there are many payments to be made for excursions, camps and swimming. It is very important that these payments are paid by the due date.
All events that require permission and payment will need to be made by the due date if you wish your child to participate.
Only in very extreme circumstances will we be able to process payments after this date, even if the excursion has not yet happened.
Unfortunately, this means your child misses out on the event.
From experience I know that parents can be quite upset when this occurs, so I ask you to be aware of this process and ensure that consent and payments are made via COMPASS on time.
If you have trouble accessing COMPASS or completing payments, please see our office staff who can assist you with the process.
Congratulations to our Boys Netball Team on their fantastic performance at the Knox Divisional Championships, held on 27th July at the Knox Regional Netball Centre.
The boys represented Regency Park Primary School with pride, winning 6 of their 7 games to finish as Runners-Up, missing out on the championship by percentage only. Throughout the day, they displayed excellent teamwork, skill and outstanding sportsmanship, making them wonderful ambassadors for our school.
A big thank you to Mrs McCoy for coaching the team and to all of our parents and families for their fantastic support and encouragement throughout the day.
