Little Learners Love Literacy Program

It is hard to believe that the end of term is fast approaching. When we reflect on the term as a whole, there is so much to celebrate. Together, we have achieved a great deal, and the many special events held throughout the term have helped create a positive and successful start to the year.

As I show prospective families around our school, they consistently comment on the warm and welcoming atmosphere. They notice how engaged and articulate our students are in their learning, and the strong, respectful relationships that are evident across all areas of the school.

A particular highlight this term has been spending time in our Prep to Year 2 classrooms and observing students during their phonics learning. This is our first year implementing the Little Learners Love Literacy program, a structured synthetic phonics approach. This evidence-based program supports students to understand the relationship between letters and sounds, building their confidence in reading (decoding) and spelling (encoding) words.  During these sessions, it is impressive to see students confidently applying their knowledge of letter–sound relationships to blend sounds and read words, as well as segment words for spelling. Using mini whiteboards, students actively practise writing words, receive immediate feedback and make quick corrections, allowing for high levels of engagement and participation as they build confidence and independence.

We thank our families for their support with our changes to take home reading. In our Prep to Year 2 classes, our take-home readers look different from those used in previous years. Our readers are now decodable texts, which are carefully aligned to the phonics skills students are learning in the classroom and selected based on point of need identified through ongoing assessment. While these books may appear simpler and include more repetition, this is intentional. The repetition helps students practise and consolidate their knowledge of letter–sound relationships, building accuracy, confidence and fluency in reading. By reading texts that closely match what they have been explicitly taught, students experience greater success and develop strong foundational reading skills. We encourage families to continue enjoying a wide range of books at home, as rich reading experiences alongside decodable texts help build a love of reading and deepen comprehension.

We also thank families for their strong participation in our recent parent–teacher interviews. We hope you found this time valuable to connect with your child’s teacher, gain insight into their learning progress and have any questions answered. While these formal opportunities are important, we know that our home–school partnership is strengthened through ongoing communication throughout the year.

Congratulations to our 2026 Student Voice Team Representatives

At Friday’s assembly, we were delighted to present our student voice representatives with their badges. Each student stepped forward with pride and enthusiasm, ready to contribute to making our school the very best it can be.

Our Student Voice Team is made up of elected representatives from each class, led by our Year 6 Student Voice Captains and supported throughout the year by Gaylene Hawkins, Eliza Griffiths, Megan McGowan, and Rebecca Bertrand. The team meets regularly to discuss what’s happening around the school, offering valuable insights into the perspectives of students across all year levels. They also brainstorm ideas to continually improve the school and explore fundraising opportunities to support various charities. We look forward to working with the 2026 SVT throughout the school year. [insert photo of me with the SVT]

Gizmo & Responsible Pet Ownership

Last week, our prep students engaged in the responsible pet ownership incursion that the rest of our school completed late last year.
We know the skills learnt through this opportunity will help not only with their interactions with Gizmo, but also with as they interact with animals outside of the school environment.

Gizmo has continued to be a positive presence across our school this term. It was with great pride that he joined us in our staff photo!
We can’t wait to get our photos this year. Gizmo will be taking some personal leave for the remainder of the term. We wish him well with his upcoming desexing procedure and look forward to welcoming him back next term.

Every Child. Every Opportunity.
With courage and commitment,

Allyson Kocaj

NAPLAN

NAPLAN assessments have now been completed for our Year 3 and Year 5 students. We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude they demonstrated throughout the process and their willingness to give their very best in each assessment.

Our Year 5 students faced an unforeseen disruption last Wednesday during the first assessment session, as the NAPLAN platform experienced technical issues nationwide. We commend our students for remaining calm, flexible, and positive, handling the interruption with maturity before successfully completing the assessment the following day.

Thank you to our dedicated teachers and support staff for their careful preparation and for creating a supportive environment for all students. We also extend our appreciation to our families for their ongoing encouragement at home. NAPLAN provides a snapshot in time, and we continue to use a wide range of data to monitor progress and support each student’s learning journey. Families can expect to receive results later in the year, typically in Term 3.

District Swimming Success

Congratulations to Jayde, Lydia, Liam and Amelia on qualifying for the Divisional Swimming Championships.
It was a fantastic achievement to reach this level of competition, and all four students represented our school with great determination, sportsmanship and effort in the pool. Their hard work and commitment to swimming were on full display, and we are incredibly proud of the way they competed.

We are also excited to announce that Jayde (Backstroke and Breaststroke), Liam (Butterfly) and Amelia (Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke) have qualified for the Eastern Regional Championships, which will be held on 31 March at AQUANATION. Reaching this stage is a wonderful accomplishment and reflects the dedication they have shown in their training and racing.

We wish Jayde, Liam and Amelia the very best of luck as they prepare to compete at the next level, and we congratulate all of our swimmers on their fantastic achievements and for representing our school so proudly.

House Cross Country

Our recent House Cross Country was a fantastic event, with kind weather and plenty of energy as the music pumped throughout the day to keep everyone motivated. Congratulations to Clarke House, who were crowned our overall winners after a series of great races and strong participation across the school.

A big thank you to our wonderful staff, supportive parents and our Sports Captains for helping make the day such a success. A special mention also goes to Mr Meeking, who created a great atmosphere with some classic tunes and did a fantastic job as MC for the event.

Once all results are finalised, including time trials for students who were absent or injured on the day, the district team will be selected to compete in Term 2.

Congratulations to all students for their effort and participation in a fantastic day of cross country running.

Our First VSSS Hub Rehearsal

A few weeks ago, the dancers in our Victorian State Schools Spectacular team had their first hub rehearsal at Fairhills High School.

It was a HUGE day where we were taught the first minute or so of 6 different routines and it was enjoyable but a little overwhelming.

Now the team is rehearsing every Thursday lunchtime, becoming more confident each week,

and they look forward to performing one of their dances for you all in Term 2. . .

2027 Prep Enrolments

Do you have a child starting Prep in 2027? Please contact the school office to receive updates on the enrolment process and key dates. We look forward to welcoming your child to our school community.

Punctuality in consent & payments on COMPASS

Thank you to all of our families who have already paid their family contributions. Please see our Business Manager, if you would like to undertake a payment plan for upcoming school costs.

Please note payments for the majority of school events/excursions will be processed via COMPASS.

Throughout the year there are many payments to be made for excursions, camps and swimming. It is very important that these payments are paid by the due date.

All events that require permission and payment will need to be made by the due date if you wish your child to participate.

Only in very extreme circumstances will we be able to process payments after this date, even if the excursion has not yet happened.

Unfortunately, this means your child misses out on the event.

From experience I know that parents can be quite upset when this occurs, so I ask you to be aware of this process and ensure that consent and payments are made via COMPASS on time.

If you have trouble accessing COMPASS or completing payments, please see our office staff who can assist you with the process.
